The first day of the fest saw the staging of five plays—Lekhak Ko?, by Madhav Prasad Banjor; Kathanaha Bhetal, which is a Maithali-language play directed by Priyanka Jha; Reality of Colour, directed by RK Mehta Roshan; and Chhoro by Yubaraj Regmi.
The plays staged on the opening day touched upon diverse themes, from war to social malpractices.
Kalam ra Banduk, a play directed by Raj Shah and based on a poem by Rajendra Shalav, brought to the stage a story from the ten-year long Maoist insurgency; Lekhak Ko? told the story of a writer caught between a rock and a hard place; while Kathanaha Bhetal revolved around the dowry malpractice.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Ashesh Malla, the founder of Sarwanam Theatre, said that the event was organised to provide a platform for up-and-coming artists.
“When I was starting out as a theatre artist, we took a long time to mature because we lacked the space to grow. This event has been organised keeping that in mind. I hope that new artists will make use of this opportunity to grow as theatre artists.”
The event on Saturday saw the staging of five plays: Ek Cup Chiya by Parikshit Bikram Rana; Aalu by Renuka Karki; Jaya Nepal by Kamal Dahal; Bhagwan by Amrit Kaucha Magar; and Bidambana by Suman Ranjit.
The fest will see the staging of around two dozen plays.
The event will continue through January 8, every day at 4:30 pm, at Sarwanam Theatre in Kalikasthan.
