Tharu, Chaudhary strike gold

Tharu won the men’s 110m and 400m hurdles titles while Chaudhary struck gold medals in the women’s 200m and long jump. Tharu clocked 16.20 to finish ahead of Chandra Dev Joshi of Nepal Police Club (NPC) and teammate Nir Bahadur Chaudhary in 110m hurdles. He finished the 400m hurdles in 57.38. Nir Pratap Mahato of Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) Club finished second and Sagar Karki third.
Chaudhary struck the women’s 200m gold in 27.55 ahead of teammate Sangita Meche (27.99) and Jayarani Tharu of Mid-west. In the long jump, Chaudhary leaped 5.08m to beat Shila Chaudhary of APF and Jayarani Tharu of Mid West. Yam Sajan Sunar of Army won the men’s 200m gold with the timings of 22.83.
Bhuwan Mahato (6.65m) of Central Region claimed the men’s long jump gold. Dil Maya Karki of APF claimed the women’s 400m hurdles title in 1:09.89. Chandrakala Lamgade of NPC clinched women’s shotput goal with a haul of 10.62m.
Ghale, Shrestha win
Tribhuvan Army Club pugilist Bishnu Ghale and Dipak Shrestha advanced to the men’s semi-finals of the 27th National Boxing Championships in Birtamode, Jhapa, on Monday.
Ghale beat Sandesh Limbu of Sunsari in the 69kg weight division and Shrestha dispatched Sabin Gurung of Kaski in 64kg category. Laxman Tamang of Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) Club, Sulav Raj Tandukar of Sunsari, Chandra Bahadur Thapa of Nepal Police Club and Tej Bahadur Deuba of Army club won the 49kg quarter-final bouts.
The 52kg division saw Prem Chaudhary of Army, Minmar Gyaljan Sherpa of Boxing Training Fitness Centre (BTFC), Bikash Manandhar of Surkhet and Bikram Pariyar of APF earn the semi-final berths. APF pugilist Puran Rai, Dinesh Baniya of Kaski, Prakash Kumar Bista of Bhaktapur and Bimal Roka of Army made it to the last four in the 56kg event.
In the 60kg division, Prakash Limbu Ilam, Abhishek Shahi Thakuri of BTFC, Dinesh Shrestha of Nepal Police and Eak Bahadur Ghale of Army secured the semi-final tickets. In the 64kg quarter-finals, Yamaraj Chaulagain of Banke, Abhiyan Rai of Jhapa and Bhupendra Thapa of Police emerged victorious. The 69kg division saw Prem Gurung of Damak, Anuj Lal Shrestha of Banuj Fitness and Bikash Lama of APF advance to the semi-finals while Kamal Thapa of Police, Ayush Paudel of Sunsari and Kailash Jung Thapa of APF earned the last four berths in the 75kg weight division. In the 81kg division, Manohar Basnet (Max) of Jhapa, Sujan Thapa of Tikathali, and Bimal Kumar Mandal of Dhanusa secured places in the semi-finals.
Army, APF triumph
Tribhuvan Army Club and APF Club made winnings starts to the women’s category of the National Kabbadi Tournament in Gulariya, Bardia, on Monday. Army recorded a 58-25 win over Central Region while APF thumped Eastern Region 76-21. Western Region beat Mid Western 29-28. In the men’s category Army saw off APF 43-30.
Mid-west in last four
Mid Western Region and Army advanced to the women’s semi-finals of the National Basketball Championships in Kath-mandu on Monday. In Group ‘B’ league consisting of only two teams, Mid Western overcome Army 45-32. Shanti Shrestha contributed 27 points for winners. Despite the defeat, Army also progressed to the semi-finals. In Group ‘A’ match, defending champions Central Region crushed Eastern Region 63-8 riding a 16-point contribution from Sneha Shrestha.
In the men’s event, Army and Police recorded wins. Holders Army club beat Eastern Region 93-72 as Sadish Pradhan and Robin Khatri scored 21 points each for the winners. Police defeated Mid Western 93-54.
