The arrestees had been collecting hefty sums from unsuspecting individuals over false promise of securing them jobs at the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) of the Indian government.
Police have identified the arrestees as Ramananda Nauniya, 41, of Rajbiraj; Santosh Karki, 28, and Binod Karki, 30, of Dolakha; Padam Bahadur Shrestha, 41, of Kavre; Chitra Bahadur Shrestha, 29, of Ramechap and Geeta Maharjan, 32 of Maharajung.
Nauniya, with the help of other arrestees, had been using fake letterhead of the Indian Embassy to prepare a counterfeit job contract.
He would charge interested individuals anywhere between Rs300,000 and Rs500,000.
“Nauniya would ask those ‘hired’ people to go to certain areas and observe the activities and report back,” said SSP Dibesh Lohani, chief of Metropolitan Police Crime Division, Teku. “They had also duped millions of rupess from various people. He had asked people to pay him an amount equivalent to four months salary for his services in securing the job.”
Police launched an investigation into the matter after more than a dozen victims lodged complaints at the MPCD against Nauniya and his aides.
The victims have said that they were promised a job with a monthly salary of Rs75,000.
SSP Lohani said statements from victims suggest that the group might have duped more people than it was initially thought.
