A mother and her child have died here in Mumra of Sanni Triveni Rural Municipality-9 during labour. Jauma Budha Sahakari, 18, of Narharinath Rural Municipality died due to excessive bleeding while delivering child at her parental home in Mumra.

District Health Office Chief Dr Kaushal Oli said that the child died during the labour on Thursday night while the mother lost her life the next morning. Health workers said that Jauma Budha had already carried out abortion twice in the past. She died due to pregnancy at an immature age, a local Arjun Budha said.

According to Arjun, the labour was being carried out at the house with the help of local women volunteers because the family thought it would be futile to take her to the health post in night.

Sanni Triveni Rural Municipality chief Dambar Bahadur Shahi said that the death occurred due to attempt to conduct the delivery at the house although there was health post near Mumra. He later issued a notice appealing all residents to deliver baby at health posts.

A total of six women have died in Kalikot since April due to unsafe childbirth practices.
