The government has finally extended the tenure of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and the Commission for Investigation of Enforced Disappeared Persons (CIEDP) by a year. The commissions, which were formed with a two-year mandate, had their primary objectives to resolve conflict issues and provide transitional justice to the war-era victims.

A Cabinet meeting held Monday afternoon extended the tenure as demanded by the two transitional justice mechanisms.

Earlier, the commissioners of two commissions had said the extension of the term without amendment in the legal provisions and amid existing administrative hurdles would be meaningless.

The government, however, extended the tenure of the commissions in status quo at the request of the commissioners as the term is expiring on February 9.

Earlier on January 6, the government had decided to prolong the tenure of the two commissions by bringing an ordinance which was endorsed by President Bidya Devi Bhandari on January 19.

Based on the same, commissioners of the both the commissions had requested the top leaders of the three major political parties and the Prime Minister to extend the term.

The TRC has received some 60,000 complaints while around 3,200 cases have been registered with the CIEDP.

Few days ago, the government had written to both the commissions to put forth any conditions for the extension of the term.

Saying that the TRC had already written to the government about the condition, it requested the government to work on the same while the CIEDP had demanded three years of extension with five conditions.
