Gaming on a budget

  • Three great budget gaming laptops that won’t put a dent in your bank account

Feb 20, 2018-Gone is the era of backbreaking heavy devices that heat up as soon as you jump into some serious gaming action.

Gaming laptop these days are portable, have a remarkable cooling formula and are designed to give you some seamless performance. Here are three laptops that suit every gamer’s gaming needs, without, of course, putting a dent in their bank accounts.

Lenovo Legion Y520

The Y520 is an inaugural member of the new Legion family of Lenovo laptops. Given its sleek design, tapered look, and texturised plastic asthetics, one might mistake it for a regular laptop. However, the device is sturdy and assures both reliability and portability.

This laptop sports a 15.6-inch display, which offers a pixel density of 141PPI. The sharpness on the display is satisfactory; however, the colour reproduction is fairly poor. The 65 percent RGB, 47percent NTSC, and 49 percent Adobe RGB colour gamut is not quite pleasing and the display on the laptop fails to depict true colors at times.

Bundled with an Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, 16GB of RAM, a 256GB PCIe SSD, and a 2TB HDD, the device is an excellent performer. Even while running numerous software and multiple tabs open on Google Chrome, the Legion does not show any signs of fatigue. With this configuration, backed by Nvidia GTX 1050Ti, the Y520 is primed for gaming. Be it high-end games or video editing and processing tasks, the Legion does not break a sweat. And the heating issue is less of a concern in the device as well. Despite the lighter weight and thinner chassis, the spaces inside the device have been wisely used and a fairly quiet thermal management system has also been incorporated.

The keyboard on the device has no dedicated Home, End, PgDn, Pg Up, PrntSc and other command keys, which might come as a disappointment to some. However, the absence of these keys has allowed generous spacing among other keys. The generous numeric keypad on the right is another noteworthy addition, as the gamers often prefer short codes and cheats while playing games. The one drawback of this device is its battery capacity. The 45 Whr battery fails to fuel the device for longer than three and half hours.

Acer Predator Helios 300

Wrapped in an aluminum-plastic body, the Predator Helios 300 boasts a 15.6 IPS LCD display with 81 percent of sRGBcolour gamut and the average brightness of 226 nits. With 1.6 mm key travel distance, the keyboard is user-friendly and backlit. For those who prefer a full RGB lighting, however, the red back light might be limiting. Just below the keyboard is a 4.1 x 3 inch trackpad, which is spacious, accurate and even responsive to all the Windows 10 gestures.

The Helios 300 is armed with a 2.8-GHz Intel Core i7-7700HQ CPU backed by 16GB of RAM and a 256GB solid-state drive. With this configuration, the device offers a performance that is truly astounding. This is to say, one can easily multitask and switch between numerous softwares without any lag. Yet, if the preinstalled amount is insufficient, the RAM storage in the Predator can even be surged up to 32GB. On the graphics section, the laptop has a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 GPU with 6GB of dedicated graphics.

The GTX 1060 graphics card is pretty dexterous while handling graphic-intensive tasks, and you will barely encounter any hiccups or a drop in frame rates even while playing heavy titles. The Predator comes with the 48Whr battery, which backs the device for around four hours.

Dell Inspiron 7567

Unlike laptops that flaunt flashy designs on the outside with deceptive compromises on the inside; Dell Inspiron 7567 is quite an exception. The laptop not only looks chic but is also a beast in terms of power and performance.

Accented in a Hibiscus Red color, the laptop looks pleasing in terms of design. Despite the use of plastic on the lid, the laptop gives out a premium vibe. The unique design with the slanted front and back edges are eye-catching, and the crisscross scheme on the front edge gives a glimpse of the cooling mechanism.

In terms of display, the 15.6-inch screen on the laptop looks sufficiently sharp and satisfactorily bright. However, the 67 percent of RGB colour gamut is undeniably poor and the colours on the screen fail to depict the accurate tones at times.

The Inspiron 7567 is driven by the Intel Core i7 7700HQ processor coupled with 16GB of DDR4 RAM, 128GB SSD and 1TB of HDD. With this configuration, the laptop offers buttery-smooth performance and switching and multitasking between apps are fluid, without any hiccups. The device on the top carries Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti GPU to handle the graphics related tasks. With this GPU in action, even triple AAA games run smoothly with appreciable frame rates.

This laptop is fueled by a 74 Whr battery providing a remarkable six hours of backup on the normal usage but the backup time falls to two hours when switching to intense gaming.
