BMK climb to second, GGIC trounce TBM

Bishal Milan Kendra (BMK) climbed to the second spot of the Kwiks Basketball League on Monday with a 77-75 victory over Xavier International College on Monday.
In an away match at the Xavier basketball court in Kalopul, Bikash Gurung played a crucial role in BMK’s victory. He scored 30 points which included a three 3-pointers as well as 11 rebounds, three assists and seven turnovers. BMK have 15 points from seven games to leapfrog Kirtipur Basketball Team, who have played two games less and remain unbeaten in the league.
Tribhuvan Army Club lead the table with 18 points from six win in a row. Himalayan Hounds stay fourth on score difference with Golden Gate International College (GGIC) after the two teams were tied on nine points each. GGIC, on Monday, won their third game easing to a 92-76 win over Team Budanilkantha Municipality (TBM).
It was Xavier who had taken the lead scoring 25 points in the first quarter and stopped the visitors to 19. But BMK bounced back strong in the second quarter to overturn the lead by restricting Xavier to eight against their 18 points. They extended a four-point lead to six finishing ahead 18-16 in third quarter.
Xavier tried their best and took the decider 26-22 but fell agonizingly short. The defeat means Xavier have lost their seven consecutive games and a top four spot seems to be in jeopardy for them. Prayush Shrestha also scored 15 points for BMK, while Sandesh Tamang made eight assists and seven turnovers. Bibek Shrestha took 14 rebounds. Ajay Kushwaha scored 17 points and had eight rebounds for Xavier. Anish Magar also netted 16 points for BMK.
In the morning match, Anish Shahi Thakuri made the impact all across the court as he scored 24 points, took 18 rebounds, made six assists and had five steals to give GGIC a much-needed victory. GGIC went ahead 30-19 in the first quarter in their away match. TBM hit back in the second quarter to take a four-point lead, scoring 30 points and conceding 15 to GGIC.
GGIC then headed into the decider with an eight point advantage with a 25-13 lead in the third quarter. The visitors sealed the victory taking the final quarter 25-14. Binod Shrestha hit four 3-pointers in his 22 points. Sushil Gurung was next best performer sinking in four 3-pointers to score 16 points.
For TBM, Bikash Bohora had 19 points, six rebounds and two assists. Milan Malla’s all 12 points came from 3-pointers. Skipper Rishab Shrestha also scored 12 points for the losing side. TBM, who have six points from six matches, will host GGIC on Tuesday. In the evening match, South Siders Basketball Club will welcome Hounds.
