Makwanpur district is now self-sufficient in milk, meat and eggs, but the District Livestock Service Office (DLSO) has postponed making a formal declaration until it completes collecting data as per the standard set by the Ministry of Livestock Development.
DLSO head Dr Ram Prakash Pradhan said, “Once the data formally reveals that the district is indeed self-sufficient in milk, meat and eggs, we will make a declaration by holding an official programme.”
Currently, about 35,000 litres of milk is collected and processed at the District Milk Collection Centre daily, although the centre has a processing capacity of 50,000 litres. Milk produced in the district is shipped to Chitwan and Kathmandu districts.
Likewise, poultry and goat-rearing are now increasingly popular occupations in Makwanpur. According to the statistics of the DLSO, Makwanpur has a surplus of eggs, chicken and mutton which it exports to other districts.
The DLSO is collecting data from the sub-metropolis, municipalities and rural municipalities in the district as per scientific standards set by the Ministry
of Livestock Development to declare the district self-sufficient in dairy products. A person requires 48 eggs, 14 kg of meat and 91 litres of milk annually, said Pradhan.
According to the DLSO, Makwanpur produced 6,930 tonnes of meat in the fiscal year 2016-17, including 209 tonnes of mutton, 2,973 tonnes of buff, 167 tonnes of pork and 2,580 tonnes of chicken. The figure represents a 3.7 percent increase from fiscal 2015-16 when the district’s meat production stood at 6,673 tonnes.
Likewise, Makwanpur produced 57,661 tonnes of milk including 25,968 tonnes of cow’s milk and 31,693 tonnes of buffalo’s milk. In the fiscal year 2015-16, the district’s milk output reached 55,621 tonnes.
There are 149 cow farms, 17 buffalo farms, 88 professional goat farms and 75 pig farms in Makwanpur. Likewise, 14 professional integrated farms, 782
livestock farms and 439 poultry farms are running in the district.
According to the DLSO, the district earns Rs45.5 million from the milk industry and Rs187.25 million from the meat industry.
