Police arrested four activists of Netra Bikram Chand-led Communist Party of Nepal (CPN) in connection to the attack on Mamata Prasad Chaudhary, the mayor of Ghodaghodi Municipality in Kailali. The detained CPN activists are the district secretariat members of the party.
A group of assailants had attacked Mamata Prasad at his residence on Monday evening. The mayor, who was rushed to Nepalgunj for treatment, was airlifted to Kathmandu on Tuesday. He is receiving treatment at TU Teaching Hospital.
Kamal Chhetri, Hridaya Bogati, Bharat Shah and another CPN cadre whose name is yet to be ascertained have been held in connection to the attack.
Mayor Mamata Prasad had been dragged into a controversy after he allegedly protected Ram Bahadur Chaudhary, a self-proclaimed shaman who along with his followers had tortured an 18-year-old girl for six hours accusing her of practicing withccraft. Mayor Mamata Prasad was heavily criticised after he was accused of denying legal remedy to the victim and protecting the perpetrators. The CPN reportedly attacked him over the same issue. A CPN source said that the party took action against Mamata Prasad for protecting the perpetrator and for his involvement in financial irregularities.
The CPN district party had issued a letter threatening to take action against Mamata Prasad.
He was attacked before the local administration could offer him security details.
The Province 7 government has condemned the attack on the mayor. “The security situation is dismal in the region lately. We will hold talks with the home minister at the central government,” said Chief Minister Trilochan Bhatta.
