Shahab Alam took a hat-trick and Amit Shrestha struck a brilliant half century to lit up the Dhangadi Premier League in its first day helping their team Kathmandu Goldens ease to a seven-wicket victory over holders Team Chauraha Dhangadi on Saturday.
Electing to field first at the SP grounds, spinner Alam’s treble halted Chauraha charge before they were restricted to 145-6. Shrestha then carried the bat with a scintillating half century leading his side to 146-3 in 18.4 overs.
Shrestha and his opening partner Jaykishan Kolsawala gave Goldens a desired start with a 59-run stand for the first wicket. Kolsawala, who previously played for Lalitpur Patriots in the Everest Premier League, made 16 off 13 balls with a six and a four. Skipper Gyanendra Malla (10) and another Indian recruit Sunny Patel (seven) fell cheaply but Shrestha and Naresh Budhayer negotiated with the target easily.
Shrestha and Budhayer were involved in an unbeaten 55 run partnership for the fourth wicket to give victory in their opening match of the tournament. Man-of-the-match Shrestha made 81 from 65 with nine boundaries and four sixes. Budhayer chipped in 24 from 18 with two sixes and a boundary. Samsad Sheikh took two wickets for Chauraha.
Earlier, opener Sunil Dhamala led the Chauraha charge with two big partnerships in the top order but the middle order failed to cash in on the start. Dhamala shared 55 runs for the first wicket with Punit Mishra (nine) and an important 71 runs for the second wicket with Shankar Rana who made 36 off 31 with five boundaries.
The turning point came in the 18th over when Alam had Dhamala stumped by Kolsawala and the spinner took back-to-back wickets of Sonu Tamang (one) and Sompal Kami (duck) to complete his hat-trick. Dhamala made 68 from 57 balls with eight fours and two sixes. Chauraha could only manage 20 runs from last three overs.
