PM’s India visit fruitless for the country: NC

Claiming the country’s bilateral relations with India had already improved during the tenure of the previous government, the NC remarked that Oli’s visit was only focused on bettering his personal relations.
Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli, who returned home on Sunday after completing his maiden foreign visit, had said that his visit was historic and largely successful.
“The strained relations with India following blockade at Nepal-India border had significantly improved by the former governments under Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Sher Bahadur Deuba,” said NC leader Prakash Sharan Mahat, also a former Foreign Minister. “Nepal-India relations had already improved. Oli Ji could only have improved his relations.”
Saying that there has been a paradigm shift in the CPN-UML ‘nationalism’ while they were in the opposition and NC was at the helm, leader Mahat said PM Oli, who was a vocal critic of India, made a u-turn in his definition of nationalism as soon as he was elected to power.
“Nepali Congress is consistent in its policy and perception towards neighbouring countries whether it is in power or opposition,” said Mahat, “However, the CPN-UML and its chairman seem inconsistent on the issues. The party has demonstrated a tendency of projecting itself as a nationalist by strongly criticising India from the opposition bench, and taking a u-turn after reaching the power.”
In its preliminary response to the outcome of the prime minister’s visit on Sunday, the NC had said that PM Oli failed to take up some pressing national issues in New Delhi during his three-day state visit to India.
