Muglin-Narayanghat section cracks in another place

The recently-widened Muglin-Narayanghat road section has developed cracks in another place near Gaighat.

Some 70 meter section of the road developed cracks forcing operation of one-way traffic in the damaged section. Officials, however, said the cracks were not a result of faulty works but due to geological condition of the caved-in section. But a geological team, which reached the site to inspect the road, has not reached to any conclusion behind the road developing cracks.

Barely a month into operation, a 50-metre stretch of the road at Jugedi area in Chitwan had developed cracks, causing it to slip and sink. The first cracks on the road was due to the road contractor using dirt to add width to the road before tarmacking it.

Indian construction firm, BLA, and Shrestha Construction Company of Nepal were contracted to expand the road from Aanptari to Dasdhunga.

Project communication officer Engineer Shiva Khanal said the road initially developed small cracks which slowly grew in size. He added one-way traffic was operating on the road section since Tuesday.

Transportation along the Narayangadh-Muglin road opened round-the-clock from the first week of June after workers completed the first phase of black-topping work.

The road, which links Kathmandu with other parts of the country, accounts for 90 percent of Nepal’s total international trade traffic.
