Deuba visits Dr KC, assures Congress support

- POST REPORT, Kathmandu

Jul 21, 2018-

Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba on Friday afternoon visited Maharajgunj-based Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) to inquire about the health of social activist Dr Govinda KC.

Former Prime Minister Deuba told Dr KC that his party would always support him in his fight against corruption, social and the rights of the poor.

He told Dr KC that his party would confront the government if it attempts to table the National Medical Education Bill by altering its major provisions to permit the setting up of new medical colleges in Kathmandu Valley.

“Health is a critical issue, you should be physically fit,” Deuba said. “We have been piling pressure on the government in the House as well as the streets to table the Bill without amending its major provisions.”

Dr KC was on an indefinite hunger strike for the last 20 days at the Jumla-based Karnali Academy of Health Sciences (KAHS). Health Ministry officials shifted him by force to Kathmandu via helicopter for treatment because his health had deteriorated. The government has not made any decision yet to address the demands of Dr KC.

Earlier, talks between Dr KC’s aides and the government were deferred after the latter refused to address the demand put forth by the former to withdraw the Bill tabled in the House of Representatives. The government had earlier formed a three-member panel under the leadership of Ministry of Education Secretary Khagaraj Baral to sort out the issues.

Dr KC and Nepali Congress have pushed for introducing the National Medical Education Bill as per the spirit of the earlier bill, with the provision not to grant affiliations to medical colleges for the next 10 years in Kathmandu Valley. The erstwhile government had introduced this caveat. The current government plans to endorse the bill in the parliament.
