A meeting of the Parliamentary Hearing Committee (PHC) has ended inconclusively on Wednesday.A meeting of the Parliamentary Hearing Committee (PHC) has ended inconclusively on Wednesday.
The PHC meeting could not make concrete decision on the fate of Acting Chief Justice Deepak Raj Joshee as the main opposition Nepali Congress and ruling party failed to reach consensus on appointing Joshee as the next Chief Justice.
The meeting of the PHC had ended inconclusively on Monday after the ruling party pressed for rejecting Joshee as the next Chief Justice while the NC members in the panel stood against rejecting Joshee’s nomination.
Emerging from the meeting, PHC member Suman Pyakurel had said that PHC will take a decision through voting if the panelists fail to arrive at consensus.
In case of a vote, Sanghiya Samajbadi Forum-Nepal member Rajendra Shrestha will be a crucial player. In order to muster a two-thirds majority necessary for rejecting Joshee’s nomination, the committee needs Shrestha’s support. The 15-member panel has nine NCP members, four NC, and one each from the RJP-N and the SSF-N.
The meeting of the PHC scheduled for 3:30 started at 6pm. The next meeting of the PHC has been slated for Friday.
