Judo team off to Thailand
A 14-member Nepali Judo team on Thursday left for Bangkok as part of their preparation for the 18th Asian Games in Indonesia.A 14-member Nepali Judo team on Thursday left for Bangkok as part of their preparation for the 18th Asian Games in Indonesia.
The 10 judokas, including the seven selected for the Asiad, will compete in the Thailand International Judo North Bangkok University Championships on August 4 and 5. The Asian is scheduled for August 18 to September 2.
Indra Bahadur Shrestha (U-66kg), Sanjit Dangol (U-73kg), Sri Ram Makaju (U-90kg), Rabin Shrestha (above 100kg), Umesh Magar (U-60kg), Sanjay Maharjan (U-81kg) will compete in men’s event. Devika Khadka (U-52kg), Manita Shrestha Pradhan (U-57kg), Punam Shrestha (U-78kg) and Sumitra Rai (U-48kg) will vie in the women’s event. Sumitra, Umesh and Sanjay are not in the Nepali squad for the Asian Games.
Asian Games selected Phupu Lhamu Khatri (U-62kg) is the only remaining Nepali player not to be included in the Nepali team since she is currently undergoing special training camp in Tokyo. Nepal Judo Association president Dipak Harsha Bajracharya said that the judo team then travel to Budapest for further training. The judokas will also participate in the Budapest Grand Prix in Hungary.
