Vehicular movement in Khalanga bazaar has been obstructed for the last three weeks after multiple landslides hit Khalanga, the district headquarters of Jajarkot.

People living in bazaar area have been facing difficulties to move from one place to another after the landslides triggered by heavy rainfall. At least four dozen houses are at high risk of landslides in Khalanga, according to locals.

“The district is facing shortages of daily essentials and construction materials. Prices have risen sharply,” said Buddhi Bahadur Khatri, a local man of Bheri Municipality-3.

Patients and elderly citizens are the hardest hit as ambulances could not reach them. The landslides which occurred three weeks ago damaged road sections at Khahare Khola, Bhelale, Newroad, Redcross Bhaban, Citizens bank area, Risang and Syala areas.

While the locals are facing trouble due to the damage in various road sections, the authorities concerned are not paying attention to repair them on time. Local Shanta Bahadur Shahi said residents of New Road, Shantichautara, Bhelale, Thatibazar, Simalgairi, Thaple and Syala are at high risk of landslide. They remain in constant fear that their house might be swept away due to continuous slides.

Mayor of Bheri Municipality Chandra Prakash Gharti said multiple landslides had occurred in various places as substandard materials had been used for road construction.

“The design of the Khalanga-Rimna road is not so good too,” said Gharti, urging the Department of Roads and Department of Urban Development and Building Construction to allocate budget to immediately repair the damaged roads.
