On Tuesday, the municipal meeting introduced a revised tax system that was prepared with the approval of local stakeholders.
Earlier, the municipality had randomly raised taxes by 500 to 5,000 percent in 36 areas, causing public uproar.
Local residents, business owners and political parties protested for days, demanding revision in tax rates.
Mayor Shivanath Mahato told the Post that the revised tax system has been agreed by all sides.
Protest has been withdrawn with the introduction of new tax rates, he added.
Protest continues in Siraha’s Mirchiaya
Business owners and former people’s representatives of Mirchiaya Municipality, Siraha, continued to protest against exorbitant tax rates imposed by the recent municipal meeting.
The protesters on Wednesday said that the municipality was hurting small business owners, farmers and low to middle income families by raising taxes on everything conceivable, including chickens and ducks. They submitted an application to Mayor Shrawan Yadav, demanding that the municipality revise the tax rates. Mayor Yadav assured the protesters to convene the municipal meeting at the earliest to discuss their demand.
