The Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police had paraded Dilip Singh Bista, a 41-year-old man with a criminal past, before media claiming him to be the prime suspect of the rape and murder of Nirmala Panta in Bhimdutta Municipality-18, Kanchanpur. Bista, a resident of Khanna Chauraha area in Bhimdutta Municipality-19, was apprehended near the crime scene on Sunday.
Police making public the wrong suspect has infuriated the locals and fueled the protest. They have blamed police administration of parading a mentally unstable person as suspect to protect the prime suspect of the case. They have shut down market areas and have been staging demonstration in front of District Administration Office chanting slogans against the police administration. Transportation has also been halted.
The body of Nirmala was found in a sugarcane field on July 27, a day after she was reported missing.
Autopsy report showed that the teenager had been raped and strangulated to death.
