Kanchanpur police may seek remand extension of Roshani Bam and her sister Babita Bam in the rape and murder case investigation of 13-year-old Nirmala Panta.
The Bam sisters were arrested on Friday, and their remand is set to expire on Thursday.
“We have not recorded any statements yet, because we are still collecting information,” said SP Kuber Kadayat, adding that they would most likely seek remand extension of the sisters to facilitate the investigation.
Nirmala, a resident of Bhimdutta Municipality-2, was found dead in a sugarcane field in Bhimdutta-18 on July 27.
A forensic report showed she had been raped and strangulated to death.
The authorities inability to identify the perpetrator even a month after the incident has raised fear and anger among Kanchanpur residents.
“Police failure to solve the crime will only boost the culprits’ morale. They might be encouraged to commit similar crimes in the future,” said a woman from Bhagatpur village.
