A woman from Jhapa is fighting for her life after she suffered critical burn injuries when her husband poured kerosene over her body and set her on fire on August 28.
Lila Maya, 30, of Kamal Rural Municipality, Jhapa, is currently undergoing treatment at BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) in Dharan, Sunsari. Doctors said 40 percent her body suffered burn injuries.
Lila Maya’s husband Bhakta Bahadur Darji was arrested following the incident.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Shyamal Kumar Subba said Darji would be charged with an attempted murder case.
Lila Maya was rushed to B&C Hospital in Birtamod after the incident. But she was told to receive care elsewhere after the hospital learnt that she was unable to foot her medical bill.
After spending two days in the hospital, Lila Maya’s brother Tikaram Datal, a Bhutanese refugee, took her to the Beldangi Refugee Camp. He said he did not have the money to take her to hospital.
Lila Maya was later admitted to Amda Hospital in Damak with the help of the camp’s secretary, before she was referred to the BPKIHS.
She was brought to the Dharan-based medical facility on Saturday. A fundraiser was held in Damak for her treatment.
