Nepal Media Society rebukes ideal wage recommendation
Nepal Media Society has taken exception to the government announcing the implementation of minimum wage for journalists.Nepal Media Society has taken exception to the government announcing the implementation of minimum wage for journalists.
The NMS said in a statement on Sunday that the committee formed to come up with an ideal minimum wage for journalists had made its recommendation while harbouring resentment towards mainstream media houses.
It has demanded that the committee as well as its recommendations should be scrapped. The umbrella body of Nepali media organisations has said that the country’s economy is in tatters, and advertisements are declining, leaving media industry in a dire straits.
“It would be unfortunate for media houses if they were to implement the recommended minimum wage,” the NMS statement read.
It added that it was uncalled for of the government to tell the media houses that have been abiding by all the rules and regulations—that provide contract documents to their employees and pay tax to the state—to implement the minimum wage as per its dictate.
“Trying to enforce the minimum wage recommendation to privately-owned media houses is unwarranted,” the statement read.
Such recommendations, the NMS said, should be enforced to those media houses that do not follow the rules and regulations.
