Acid-attack baby dies, police suspect aunt

The six-month-old baby boy, who sustained critical burn injuries in acid attack at Turmakhand Rural Municipality-4, died while being rushed to Nepalgunj for further treatment.
The victim, Muskan Bayak, was in critical condition as an assailant poured chemical that left burn injuries similar to a corrosive acid on Tuesday morning.
The baby was immediately rushed to the district hospital. However, the hospital referred the baby to Nepalgunj Medical College in Kohalpur stating that his treatment was not possible in the district.
Meanwhile, a police team that reached the incident site detained Janaki Bayak, 25, in connection with the incident. The suspect is the victim’s aunt.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Janak Shahi said, “Preliminary investigation shows the baby’s aunt Janaki Bayak poured the chemical while he was asleep at home. Detailed investigation is underway.”
Local residents suspected Janaki might have poured acid on the child over a family dispute. According to the villagers, families of Janaki and the victim’s parents have a dispute since long.
The nasty incident took place at around 11am while the baby was asleep alone in his parents’ home. The baby’s father was away from home while his mother was at an animal shed nearby.
