Five people were killed in Rautaha’s Tikuliyaghat Village died when a boat carrying 29 people across the Lalbakaiya River capsized on August 25 after hitting a pillar of an under-construction bridge. Pappu Construction had been awarded the contract for the bridge for years ago with a completion deadline of July 2017.
The arrest warrant was issued after the families of victims the lodged a complaint claiming that the Pappu construction didn’t complete the contract on time. The District Police had been requesting him to show up at the police office time and again.
According to Rautahat District Police Chief SP Kedar Dhakal, the police knocked on the door of district to issue the arrest warrant against Rauniyar after he allegedly turned a deaf ear to the repeated requests to appear at the police office for enquire into the boat capsize incident.
“After the victims lodged a complaint against him, we urged him to show up at the police office. But he didn’t show any concern. That’s why we deployed a team after getting a court order,” said SP Dhakal.
Locals of Tikuliya and Gaur had handed over a memorandum to the District Administration Office, Rautahat, to take action against Pappu Construction. The Pappu Construction Company was awarded the contract to construct the bridge.
If the bridge had been completed on time last year, the villagers wouldn’t have had to risk their lives by using a dilapidated boat across the river during monsoon.
