Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa has said that the rape and murder of 13-year-old Nirmala Pant is being unnecessarily politicised. “There are lots of criminals who have been brought to justice 13 years after their crimes. Even though the government is doing its best to arrest the perpetrators in Nirmala rape and murder case, the effort alone will not guarantee their arrest. It could take time,” said Minister Thapa at a press meet in Bharatpur Airport on Wednesday.
“There are hundreds of Nirmalas in our society who have been raped and statistics show that hundreds of women have suffered the same fate as Nirmala even before the formation of incumbent government. The government is moving ahead with necessary legal actions on every case,” he added.
According to Home Minister Thapa, the government was doing its job to catch the culprits in Nirmala’s case and that there was no need to politicise the case.
More than two months have passed since Nirmala’s body was discovered in a sugar cane field in Mahendranagar on July 27, but the authorities have failed to identify the culprits.
Meanwhile, public outrage is growing all over the nation. Protests are being staged in different parts of the country on a daily basis, demanding justice for Nirmala. Minister Thapa has called for a calm, saying that the government was committed to delivering justice to Nirmala.
Claimed that Nepal Police has the record of arresting 95 per cent of the rapists, he said it was unfair to accuse the government and the law enforcement agency of incompetence in Nirmala’s case.
“It could be said that the government did not fulfil its duties if the government did not initiate the investigation,” said Minister Thapa.
