In the US mid-term election held on Tuesday, Bhandari was elected from District 8 of Maryland State. Bhandari is the first American of Nepali origin to be elected directly in the US mainstream politics.
At least 141 persons represent the House of Delegates from 47 Districts of the Maryland State. Bhandari was elected to the House of Delegates securing second position.
He had faced a defeat in the initial phase in the election held in 2014.
Bhandari, representing Maryland District, had filed his candidacy for the House of Delegates from the Democratic Party. He had won in the interparty election held in June this year, securing 5,941 votes.
A teacher by profession, Bhandari had visited 15,000 houses to canvass votes in the election campaign this year.
Born in Parbat district of Nepal, he has been active in the Democratic Party for over one decade. Bhandari thanked his voters after he was elected to the House of Delegates.
