Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has once again urged the ministers to not make public Cabinet decisions to mediapersons on the same day.

In a Cabinet meeting held on Thursday, PM Oli urged the ministers to not reveal the decisions after some ministers were found making public the decisions. A Cabinet meeting held on Sunday had requested the ministers to not disclose the Cabinet decisions to the mediapersons on the same day.

“The Prime Minister urged the ministers today also,” Government’s spokesperson and Minister for Information and Communications Gokul Baskot said in a press conference today.

He said that the government has brought a policy to disclose the decisions every Thursday by holding a press conference with an objective to make the government decisions more effective.

Minister Baskota, however, clarified that the government has not barred journalists from covering the Cabinet decisions.

Though the government had made 22 decisions during a Cabinet meeting held at Baluwatar on Sunday night, the government had refused to reveal the decisions.

For the first time in 15 years, members of media organisations were not provided access to the decisions from the Cabinet meeting, which has long been a tradition and hallmark of the successive democratic governments of Nepal.

Following the restoration of democracy in 1990, every government has held a media briefing after the meeting. The tradition was institutionalised and formalised after 2006 when the country went through its second popular uprising.
