India and Bangladesh secured semi-final berths in the mixed team event of the South Asian U-21 Regional Badminton Championships at the APF Headquarters courts in Halchowk on Tuesday.
India beat Bangladesh 5-0 but despite the mauling the latter also advanced as Group ‘A’ runner-up. Dhruba Raut beat SSM Shiwagathulla 21-17, 21-18 in the men’s singles and Malvika Bansod saw off Urmi Akhtar 21-4, 21-9 in women’s singles. Bishnu Bardan and Priyanshu Rajwat teamed up to beat Gaurab Singh and Mangal Singh 21-14, 21-9 in the men’s double, while Purva Burve and Tanisha Crosta dispatched Urmi Akhtar and Rashma Akhtar 21-11, 21-9 in women’s doubles. India completed the rout of Bangladesh in the mixed team event when Bishnu Bardan and Tanisha Crosta eased past Shiwagathulla and Farwin Binta Imdal 21-8, 21-8 in the mixed doubles match.
Hosts Nepal, Sri Lanka and Maldives are in Group ‘B’. Nepal prevailed over Sri Lanka in the mixed team event wining 3-2. Nabin Shrestha won the men’s single match while Nepal also won the men’s doubles and mixed doubles matches. Nabin beat Ranthuska Sasindu 22-20, 21-13 in the men’s singles match but Rasila Maharjan lost 21-12, 21-12 to Dilmi Diyas in the women’s singles. The pair of Nabin and Prince Dahal then beat Chirath Illeperumarachi and Chamath Diyas 21-18, 23-21 in the men’s doubles. Rasila and Jessica Maharjan lost 21-13, 21-8 to Dilmi and Hasina before the mixed pair of Prince and Rasila secured victory for Nepal by defeating Ranthuka and Diyas 21-19, 21-13.
Nepal now needs to beat Maldives on Wednesday to secure its passage into the semi-finals. Defeat against Maldives will meant teams with better head-to-head will advance to the semi-finals of the mixed team event.
Sri Lanka dispatched Maldives 4-1 in mixed team event Group ‘B’ event. For Sri Lanka, Ranatoshka Sasindu beat Ahmed Niwal 21-13, 21-11 in men’s single and Dilmi Diya defeated Aminati Nawiha 21-6, 21-11 in women’s singles matches. Sri Lanka also won both the men’s and women’s doubles matches. Chamath Diyas and Chirathilep Iramarochi beat Md Akif and Md Rafa 21-7, 21-10 in men’s doubles while Hasina Ambalangdug and Dilmi Diya overcame Aminati Nabuha 21-10, 21-19 in women’s doubles. Niwal Ahmed and Fathma Nawaha saved the Maldivian blushes with 21-19, 15-21, 21-18 win over Ranthuka and Hashra Vijawardane in mixed doubles match.
