Top-ranked Nepali golfer Shivaram Shrestha opened up a two-stroke lead in the first round of the Surya Nepal Kathmandu Open at the par-8 Royal Nepal Golf Club (RNGC) on Tuesday.
Shrestha took full advantage of his familiarity with the home course to card six-under 62 in the first day of the second event under the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2018-19. Lurking behind were Bhuwan Nagarkoti and amateur Tanka Bahadur Karki who scored an identical four-under 64.
The RNGC pro Shrestha shot two-under 32 on the front nine and four-under 30 on the back nine. The Nepal No 1 sank birdies on the third and fifth holes before going one better on the fourth with an eagle. He, however, dropped shots on the second and ninth holes. On his way back, Shrestha sank more birdies on the 10th and 16th. In between, Shrestha also sank an eagle on the 13th.
Nagarkoti carded two-under 34 on either side of the turn. He sank birdies on the first, third and fourth holes against a bogey on the ninth. On the back nine, he carded birdies on the 10th, 11th, 13th and 14th against bogeys on the 12th and 17th holes. Karki carded four-under 30 on the front nine and even-par 34 on the back nine. Karki sank birdies on the first, second and fifth, eagle on the fourth against a bogey on the sixth. On his way back, Karki sank birdies on the 10th and 11th holes against bogeys on the 13th and 14th holes.
Rame Magar and Dhana Bahadur Thapa were tied for fourth at three-under 65. Bikash Adhikari was in sixth place at two-under 66. Deepak Magar and amateur Subash Tamang were tied for seventh at one-under 67. Amateur Sukra Bahadur Rai and Rajendra Thapa Magar were in ninth place at even-par 68. Another amateur golfer Bipin Tamang and pros Surya Prasad Sharma and Bhuwan Kumar Rokka shared the 11th place at one-over 69.
In all 41 golfers—33 pros and eight amateurs—are taking part in the tournament organised by Nepal Professional Golfers Association. The cut will be applied at the end of the second round on Wednesday. Top 21 pros and six amateurs will make it to the final two rounds. The tournament offers Rs 551,250 in total prize money with the champion walking away with Rs 95,000. The runner-up will earn Rs 65,000 with the third-place finisher assured of Rs 55,000. All the pros making the cut are also assured of their share of cash rewards.
