International Series Badminton: Nepal’s challenge ends at quarter-finals stage

Nepal’s challenge in the Yonex Sunrise Nepal International Series badminton tournament ended on Thursday after the shuttlers from the host nation were knocked out of the quarter-final stages at the Nepal Armed Police Force headquarters in Halchowk.
The only remaining player in the men’s singles category, Nepal No 1 Ratnajit Tamang, lost to India’s Kaushal Dharmamer 21-14, 22-24, 21-11 in the quarter-finals. Along with Dharmamer, Cao Cuon Pham of Vietnam, Teck Zhi Shoo of Malaysia and Kunlavut Vitidsarn entered the semi-finals. Soraya Aghaeihajiaagha of Iran, Thet Htar Thuzar of Myamar, Rashi Tyagi of India and Chananachida Jucharoen of Thailand made it to the women’s singles semi-finals.
Nepal feature in three out of four quarter-final matches in the mixed doubles but none of the pair managed to sneak through. Dipesh Dhami and Shova Gauchan lost to Danny Bawa Chrisnata of Singapore 21-11, 21-10, Bijeet Thapa Magar and Pooja Shrestha bowed out to Thailand duo of Panachai Worasaktayanan and Pitchayanin Ungka 24-22, 21-14 and Bikash Shrestha Sita Rai surrendered 21-15, 21-18 to Raju Mohammad Rehan and J Anees Kowsar of India 21-15, 21-8.
Supak Jomkoh and Supissara Paewsampran of Thailand was another pair to reach the last four in mixed doubles. The top Nepali pair of Tamang and Dipesh Dhami were sent packing from the men’s doubles quarter-finals by Warit Sarapat and Worasaktayanan 21-19, 16-21, 21-14.
Indian pairs of V Hanumaiah Ranganathan/A Surya of India and Hemanth M Gowda/Madhusudan Madappa along with Supak Jomkoh and Wachirawit Sothon of Thailand entered the men’s doubles semi-finals. Amita Giri and Rashila Maharjan of Nepal walked over from their women’s doubles semi-final match against Aghaeihajiaagha and Thuzar.
Jessica Gurung and Sunaina Mukhiya lost to Aminath Abdul Razzaq and Fatima Abdul Razzaq of Maldives 21-12, 21-11. Thilini Pramodika Hendahewa and Kavidi Sirimannage of Sri Lanka entered the semi-finals in the women’s doubles followed by Aparna Balan and Shruti KP of India.
