The Metropolitan Police Range Kathmandu has rescued 21 people from a rehab home run by Transformation Nepal in Sukedhara, Kathmandu Metropolitan City-4.
A team from the Range arrested the reform home owner Santosh Ghimire and Samit Malla, an employee there.
Police arrested them on the charge of torturing the inmates of the home.
At a news conference held here on Friday, Range Chief Basanta Lama said, “Thirteen out of the 34 inmates fled the rehab home and reported to the police the torture they had to endure there.
The victims’ families submitted an application to the police urging action against the owner of the rehab home rescuing the others inmates. Based on this, we rescued the remaining 21 inmates on Thursday.”
The rescued inmates have been handed over to their families, police said.
Lama said preliminary investigation shows the proprietor took money from the parents of the inmates for the entire year at the rate of Rs35,000 per person per month.
The home authorities inflicted various kinds of physical and mental torture on the inmates and did not allow them to meet with their parents.
“This incident took place as the parents were not serious,” Lama said.
The rehab home operated in Kapan five years ago, currently it runs from Sukedhara.
Police said action would be taken against the arrested men as per the Clause 168 of the Criminal Code.
