Senior leaders of the main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) are at odds over increasing the number of party office bearers. The chances of forging consensus on the statute have increased if the number of office bearers is not raised.

Attempts have been made to resolve the issues among the leaders after holding discussion on the draft of the statute at the party Central Working Committee meeting held on Saturday.

The integrated draft statute will be presented in the party Mahasamiti meeting if the leaders reached an understanding on the same. But if they failed resolve the contentious issues, Ram Chandra Paudel-faction is likely to submit a separate proposal, sources said.

A meeting held at the residence of former General Secretary Prakash Man Singh in Chaksibari, Kathmandu on Sunday decided stick to the stance on increasing the number of office bearers and holding the election for the office bearers.

The meeting dwelt on taking ahead the proposal of 11-member office bearers including three vice-presidents, three general secretaries, a joint general secretary and a treasurer, said NC central member Nabindra Raj Joshi, who was present in today’s meeting.

“Opinions have been floated to make office bearers inclusive. Decision has been made to hold a discussion with the party President to resolve the issue,” said Joshi.

The leaders loyal to NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba are in a position to make the office bearers inclusive only if the office bearers need to be increased.

The Paudel faction has decided to take ahead a proposal to make 15-member Parliamentary Committee in which 11-member office bearers will be appointed automatically. The Paudel faction has decided to show flexibility to make a provision that will empower the party president to appoint only four persons. However, some leaders have been saying that the members should be appointed through election rather than hand-picked by President.
