KMC launches Smart Urban Technology Challenge 2018

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) launched the Smart Urban Technology Challenge (SUTC)-2018 under the Metropolis City Plan Commission (CPC) on Wednesday.

The metropolis has announced to give a platform to over 100 innovative ideas where the participants have to come up with creative ideas to sort out the problems faced by the metropolis.

 Mayor Shakya, who heads the commission, said the KMC launched this scheme especially for the creative and innovative youths.

 “We live in the era of smartphone and smart technology. We want to stop the brain drain. That is why we are creating a conducive environment for youths to work within the country,” said Shakya.

The central government has provided an initial fund of Rs 500 million for the SUTC.

The competition, which is going to last for six months, has been announced in four categories: Community and Environment, Urban Infrastructure, Municipal Community Services, and Metropolitan Public Administration and Management.

Under the Community and Environment category, participants have to come up with ideas on urban waste management, environment protection, urban agriculture and pollution control. Under the Urban Infrastructure, the participants have to come up with ideas on solving traffic problems, parking management, public toilets, and open spaces. Under the Municipal Community Services, the participants should come up with solutions to ensure smooth supply of goods and improve public schools.  Under the Metropolitan Public Administration and Management, the participants should find solutions for urban mapping, tracking revenue and expenditure, data collection and management, and management of municipal tax.

Deputy Mayor Hari Prabha Khadgi said the task is going to bring a visible change in the metropolis.

“Only with the involvement of young and creative minds can we achieve prosperity,” she said.    

 Nepali citizens based anywhere in the world can participate in the challenge.

The winner of the overall competition will be awarded Rs500,000; the category winner and the runner-up will get Rs200,000 and Rs100,000 respectively.

The winners will be announced on April 25, 2019. The participants can submit their ideas on The submission date will close on January 14.
