The Nepali Congress Mahasamiti meeting was put off on Tuesday after the situation became tense with the district presidents insisting on not allowing the meeting to resume until the draft of party charter is presented.
No sooner had the party President Sher Bahadur Deuba announced the commencement of the meeting than the district presidents climbed onto to the stage and created a ruckus demanding the charter be presented before the meeting starts. Deuba immediately announced the postponement of the meeting.
A minor confrontation followed when leader Prakash Sharan Mahat snatched the microphone from Nuwakot district president Jagdishnar Singh KC. The district presidents were speaking from the stage.
Senior leaders of the party went to Parliamentary Party Office in Singha Durbar to discuss the party charter.
Earlier meetings between the leaders on Monday had failed to reach a consensus on amending the party charter after leaders had their differences on the number of office bearers to be elected by the General Convention and nominated by the party president.
The two rival factions of the party had agreed to increase the number of office bearers to eight—party president, two vice presidents, two general secretaries, two joint general secretaries and one treasurer—from the current six but disputes remain over how many of them will be elected and how many will be nominated by the party president.
