Thirty-four Indian students from Janaki Medical College in Janakpur could not sit their first year MBBS exams that kicked off from Thursday.
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) had barred these students from taking the exams after finding that the college had admitted them without conducting the entrance test.
Only 46 students from the college were allowed to take the exams, according to IOM Assistant Dean Rajendra Prasad Sharma.
The 34 students from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Punjab, New Delhi, Gujarat and Rajasthan of India had paid the college as much as Rs 5 million for enrolment.
After the IOM decided to bar them from sitting the MBBS exams, Riya Sah had filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court on December 16, appealing that they be allowed to take the first year finals.
The court has scheduled the case hearing for December 23. Earlier, the college had also filed a writ petition at the Patan High Court, but the appeal was denied.
With the case sub judice in the Supreme Court, the college representatives have been reportedly visiting the “power centres” to lift the ban.
Sources say that the 34 students were admitted to the college without proper documents through Indian consultancies.
The current college administration has claimed that these students were enrolled by the previous management that was in charge until six months ago.
