With Christmas and New Year fast approaching, cafes and restaurants in the Valley have started announcing special events to celebrate the festivities. During this period, cafes and restaurants record two-fold increase in business, according to cafe owners.
This has been attributed to the growing trend of celebrating Christmas and New Year in Nepal, as the country’s per capita income continues to rise. Cafes and restaurants have noticed this trend and want to strike while the iron is hot by offering promotions such as live music, new cuisine and more to attract customers.
Gunmuni Shakya, managing director of Cafe De Patan said that business increases by 40 percent during Christmas and New Year.
According to Mohit Acharya, owner at Bricks Cafe, the trend of celebrating Christmas and New Year started to really take off in the past four years. People just need a reason to celebrate and spend quality time with family and friends, he said.
“The crowd doubles during Christmas and New Year,” he said. Youngsters typically celebrate Christmas while families opt to celebrate the New Year, said Acharya.
Bricks Cafe is organising live music in a bid to attract more customers during Christmas Eve and Christmas day. The same event will be held during New Year Eve and New Year.
On the other hand, Cafe de Patan plans to introduce new cuisine to celebrate the occasion.
Vimla Thapa of Kalanki said that she plans to celebrate Christmas Eve with her friends in a cafe.
She said that it has been three years since she started celebrating the day with her friends and family. As everyone is busy with hectic schedules, occasions like this is a good reason that brings us together, she said.
People have started dining out at least once in a week and occasions like this can be a good reason to hang out with family and friends, said a cafe owner.
As more Nepalis start developing a ‘foodie’ palate, good food and music is the perfect combination to attract customers during the festive period.
According to Kumar Gurung, owner of King’s Lounge, social media is also propagating the trend of celebrating Christmas and New Year among Nepalis. King’s Lounge is looking to woo customers with Deepak Bajracharya and a live band on Christmas Eve.
