Himalayan Sherpa routs BBC

  • ‘A’ Division League
- PRAJWAL OLI, Kathmandu

Dec 27, 2018-

A brace from Bishwas Shrestha led Himalayan Sherpa Club to a 4-1 thumping of Brigade Boys Club (BBC) while Jawalakhel Youth Club (JYC) overcome Machhindra Club 2-1 in the Martyrs Memorial ‘A’ Division League match at the ANFA Complex in Satdobato on Wednesday.

Himalayan Sherpa struck all four goals in the second half while BBC pulled back a late consolation goal. Aruj Singh broke the deadlock after interval and Guinean recruit Fode Fofana added another for JYC before Adaba Ademola pulled back one for Machhindra late on.

The fifth victory lifted Himalayan Sherpa three spots up to fifth with 17 points from 11th matches while BBC is second from bottom with six points in the 14-team league which do not have provision of relegation. JYC, which tasted third victory of the league, climbed one place up to ninth with 11 points. Machhindra, with one win and three draws, sits 10th with nine points.

Both JYC and Machhindra failed to create remarkable chances in the first half other than Gautam Shrestha’s 40th minute header for the Lalitpur-based team. Shrestha’s powerful header in Suraj Jeu Thakuri’s corner landed straight at the grateful hands of goalkeeper Jeevan Bhattarai. JYC upped its ante after the break and Fode Fofana, with only goalie Bhattarai on his way, fired above bar in the 48th minute.

JYC came closer to scoring a minute later as Thakuri’s one-touch strike in a Fofana pass was blocked brilliantly by custodian Bhattarai. JYC finally got the breakthrough, scoring from penalty spot in the 55th minute after defender Anjan Devkota handled then ball inside the area. Aruj Singh stepped in to converted from the spot.

In the 65th, Fofana doubled the JYC advantage, perfectly placing the ball into the net following a Suman Dangol cross. Machhindra pulled one back in the 90th minute through Alaba Ademola header. But the goal came too late for Machhindra to even think for an equaliser.

“We came into the match with three points on sight and I am happy that we achieved that,” said JYC assistant coach Naresh Thapa. “I think we are now almost safe from finishing in the bottom two positions irrespective of how we fare in rest of the campaign,” added Thapa. Though there won’t be relegation in the league, the bottom two teams will have two points deduction in the next season.

Machhindra coach Nishan Shrestha believe it was a evenly contested match and blamed referee Nabindra Maharjan of not awarding them a penalty during the late stages of the game. Shrestha however was optimistic that his side would avoid bottom two finish by winning its remaining two matches.

In the early match at ANFA, Himalayan Sherpa opened the scoring in the 46th through Ivorian recruit Patrick Private Goha. It added another goal in the 54th through Bhison Gurung. Bishwas Shrestha netted third in the 61st fourth in the 80th to take his league tally to five goals. He is two goals behind league goal scorer Ranjit Dhimal of Three Star. Bartaman Rai pulled one back for BBC in the 87th minute.

In Halchowk, Friends Club came from behind to salvage a 1-1 draw against bottom-placed New Road Team (NRT). Sushil Lama had put NRT ahead in the 43rd before Ashim Bhusal equalised in the 78th minute. With two wins and three draws Friends sits on 11th place with nine points while NRT remains at rock-bottom with five points.
