The government has clarified that lawmaker Resham Chaudhary, who has been remanded to custody as the main suspect of the 2015 Tikapur incident, will be booked according to the law.

Speaking at a press conference organised at Singha Durbar in Kathmandu on Thursday, government spokesperson and Minister for Information and Communications Gokul Prasad Baskota said the court verdict should be followed in the rule of law and Chaudhary should also abide by the court’s decision.

Saying that issues that can be resolved legally should not be viewed through political lens, Baskota said, “Not matter who the person is, he shall be punished according to law.”

 “Everybody knows what had happed in Tikapur. Chaudhary should face punishment if the court finds him guilty,” he said.

Lawmaker-elect of Kailali constituency-1 Resham Chaudhary, the main accused in 2015 Tikapur incident, took the oath of office and secrecy on Thursday.

Chaudhary had been elected as a member of the House of Representatives from Kailali-1 from Rastriya Janata Party Nepal’s (RJP-N) ticket, securing more than double the votes of his closest rival candidate Madan Kumar Shah of CPN-UML.

Chaudhary’s spouse Ranjita Shrestha and son were also present during the swearing in ceremony.

The oath ceremony initially slated for 11am was postponed for 3 pm as the Dillibazaar Jail administration was not made aware about the ceremony.

Chaudhary is the main accused in the lynching of eight police personnel and an infant in Tikapur of Kailali district of August 2015. He was on the run after being charge-sheeted for his alleged key role but later surrendered before Kailali District Court on February 26, 2018.
