It’s not an unusual sight to see rhinoceros roaming the streets of Chitwan district as the Chitwan National Park is home to a majority of Nepal’s endangered one-horned species that often enter settlements

However, the locals were left stunned on Friday when they saw a rhino with a new born calf in Baraghrey area, about two kilometres West of downtown of Narayangarh—the headquarters of Chitwan.

Locals said the rhino they saw entering the town on Thursday evening alone and was spotted with a calf this morning. Locals thronged to see this rare sight nearby an open ground in the midst of dense settlement.

“The rhino had come alone at around 4-5 pm yesterday. But this morning we saw it coming out of the bush with a newly delivered calf,” said Sharaswoti Shrestha, a local of Baragharey. The rhino disappeared in a nearby island formed by Narayani River.

Locals have been demanding the national park authority to take necessary steps to stop rhinoceros from entering the village. Around 5-7 rhinoceros, who have started living in the island in recent times, come to the village in search of food.
