Maharjan, Dahal enter U-19 singles last 16

Prince Dahal and Prafulla Maharjan of Nepal advanced to the U-19 singles quarter-finals of the President Cup Junior International Badminton Championships in Biratnagar on Tuesday.

Dahal beat compatriot Priyanshu Chhetri 21-13, 21-11 and Maharjan also eased past his Nepali compatriot Suraj Gupta 21-8, 21-11. Joining the duo to the last eight in the category were Satyam Subba, Pranish Thakuri, Saroj Ansari and Rukesh Maharjan and Pabin Linthep of Nepal and Thu Rin of Myanmar. 

Subba defeated Safal Thapa 21-19, 21-16, Thakuri saw off Devraj Rana 17-21, 22-20, 21-19 and Linthep rallied to a 19-21, 21-10, 21-14 win over Diwas Bishwokarma. Rin got the better of Nepali shuttler Pemba Sherpa 21-15, 21-12. Ansari defeated his compatriot Bhoj Gurung 22-20, 21-11 and Maharjan got the better of Anish Khatiwada 21-4, 21-9.

Rohit Baral, Bibek Chaudhary, Ujjwal Shrestha and Narendra Bam of Nepal also advanced to the U-15 category quarter-finals. Baral overcame Indian shuttler Anoj Chhetri 21-13, 21-14, Chaudhary saw off compatriot John Jashraj 21-16, 21-18, Shrestha got the better of Mingma Chhiring Lepcha of India 21-14, 21-14 and Bam dispatched Anish Khatiwada 21-19, 21-17.

Bishna Rai and Rose Pandey also made it to the U-19 girls’ quarter-finals. Rai eased past Limin Belbase 21-7, 21-6 while Pandey beat Smriti Rai 21-6, 21-4. Organised by Morang District Badminton Association, the tournament offers Rs 250,000 in total prize money in six categories. The tournament features competition in U-19 boys and girls’ singles, U-15 boys’ and girls’ singles as well doubles events in both age groups.
