Nepal gets subscription boxes for menstruation

- KRISHANA PRASAIN, Kathmandu

Jan 9, 2019-

Periods have always been a painful and stressful experience for women. From worrying about it being a taboo subject to dealing with the various mental and physical changes, women in Nepal have had to deal with periods on their own.

But that may soon become a thing of the past.

The She Thing Period Box—Nepal’s first period box subscription—is aiming to help women tackle their menstruation with grace. The box comes with period essentials, hygiene products, cosmetic items and exciting gifts.

Shristi Pahari and Nabina Subedi, co-founders of The She Thing, started selling the period box from October 2018. The concept of a period box emerged to encourage discussion of menstruation in a society that considers the topic taboo, said Shristi Pahari.

“We launched this period box with the hope of getting people to talk about menstruation more openly,” she said.

The period box can also be thought of as a ‘gift box’ that one can buy for themselves or others, to make the individual undergoing menstruation feel pampered and lifting their spirits, Pahari added.

The period box contains sanitary napkins, menstrual hygiene products, snacks and chocolates, health and beauty products. It also comes with a thoughtful gift from the company. This mystery item and the theme of the box will be freshened up every month, she added.

The She Thing Period box is available in three variants—Normal, Heavy and Red Fairy box. The normal variant is for normal period flow and is priced at Rs650 while the heavy variant, as its name suggests, is for heavier period flow and costs Rs1,199. The Red Fairy is a special variant for the woman’s very first period and is priced at Rs2,500.

Customers can buy a normal box subscription for 3, 6 or 12 months and it will set them back Rs1,830, Rs2,480 and Rs6,600 respectively. Similarly, a subscription for the heavy variant is priced at Rs3,450, Rs6,600 and Rs12,600.

According to Nabina Subedi, their heavy box variant includes regular pads, night pads, xxxl pads, pantyliners, chocolates and snacks, period panty-normal panty, pad pouch, craving candy, peebuddy, feminine pain relief patch, vaginal wipes, surprise gift, cold cream, hair serum, loofah, gift vouchers and more.

The She Things has provided its services to more than 70 ladies till date, according to the company based in Anamnagar, Kathmandu. Pahari said that they have been receiving 1 to 2 orders for a period box daily.

For monthly subscribers, The She Things has been delivering the period box a week prior to the customer’s period by tracking the menstruation date and providing free delivery.

People can order a period box via the company’s official Facebook and Instagram page.
