Emerging shuttler Prince Dahal claimed both the boys’ U-19 and U-15 titles of the President Cup Junior International Badminton Championships on Friday.
Dahal, who is expected to lead the new generation of Nepali badminton, had contrasting victories in the finals of the two categories. Dahal took no time beating compatriot Praful Maharjan 21-8, 21-10 in the U-19 final but had to toil in the U-15 final against Zaw Lin Htoo of Myanmar.
Against the Myanmar shuttler, Dahal won the first set 21-15 but Htoo hit back in the second winning 17-21. The Nepali youngster, however, raced away in the third set winning it 21-9. Jessica Gurung and Rashila Maharjan also claimed double titles as the pair combined to win the U-19 doubles final following their victories in the singles categories.
Jessica claimed the girls’ U-19 singles defeating Maharjan 24-22, 21-14 in the final and the latter took the U-15 singles gold easing past Smriti Rai 21-7, 21-3. The two singles winners had earlier beaten compatriots Sima Rajbanshi and Neeta Lamshal 21-12, 21-3 in the U-19 girls’ doubles title match.
Praful had some solace after he won the U-19 boys’ doubles final. The Nepali pair of Praful and Rukesh Maharjan got the better of Myanmar duo Htoo and Thu Rein 19-21, 21-17, 21-18. The top three finishers in all the categories got Rs 20,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively.
