A hat-trick from captain Bharat Khawas inspired defending champions Tribhuvan Army Club to a 3-0 win over Nawa Janajagriti Youth Club of Simara in the Bishal Memorial Gold Cup football tournament at the Narayani Stadium in Birgunj on Monday.
The departmental giants kept the match under control from the beginning but were made to wait for the first goal until 43rd minute. Nepali international Khawas made the breakthrough on a pass from Sesanka Limbu. Khawas doubled their advantage three minutes after restart, again set up by Limbu. Khawas completed his hat-trick in the 69th from penalty after he was fouled by Nawa Janajagriti skipper Sunil Raut. Khawas stepped in to convert the spot kick. Khawas was declared man-of-the-match and won purse of Rs 5000.
“We are here to defend the title we won last year,” said Khawas. Army coach Nabin Neupane said that his team will come up with even stronger show in next games. “It took time for the players to penetrate through opponent’s defence but the first goal open the floodgates for us,” said Neupane.
Nawa Janajagriti coach Sonu Chhetri said they gave priority to local players in the squad which made the team comparatively weak. “We would have fared lot better had we preferred to field stronger squad,” said the coach. Jhapa XI will take on Royal FC of Siliguri on Tuesday.
