Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) Club beat Bishal Memorial Foundation of Birgunj 1-0 to enter the quarter-finals of the Simara Gold Cup football tournament on Friday.
Ashish Lama scored the winning goal in the 36 minute. Lama capitalized on a short pass inside the area from teammate Santosh Lama to score the all-import goal. APF resorted to protecting their lead and succeeded in doing so despite repeated attempts from their opponents. Ram Kumar Kumal and Sudeep Shikrakar came close to adding to the APF only to see their close-range attempt sail wide.
Birgunj coach Sulabh Jung Rana rued on the missed opportunities. “I am happy to give a tough fight against the top team like APF. It was unfortunate that we squandered three good scoring chances. Credits to them for using the space we left for scoring the goal,: said Rana.
Despite the victory, APF coach Ratnajit Maharjan was unhappy with the performance of his team. “We were below par in all respect. This was our first game and hopefully we will improve in the next game. We had to sustain a huge pressure in the last 10 minutes to protect the lead,” said Maharjan.
Goal-scorer Lama was adjudged man-of-the-match and received Rs 10,000 for his effort. Saraswoti Youth Club will take on Sankata Club on Saturday.
