Women from Kamaiya community, freed labourers, have launched campaigns to end gender-based violence in Kailali district.
The women organised public awareness campaigns against gender violence in all 13 local units of the district, saying that women from their community cannot reach the concerned authorities for legal support.
Coordinator of the Women Violence Control Network Kaushilya Chaudhary said women from Kamaiya community are confined in their houses and are unable to raise their voice. Kailali has around 700 Kamaiya women, and the network has been providing legal counsel to them.“Incidents of violence against women is on the rise despite the provision of law to protect women,” said Kaushilya.
Women right activists said most of the women are not aware of the laws that ensure their protection.
The Area Police Office in Tikapur has also been raising awareness programmes to end violence against women. Tikapur Police said it has conducted around 200 awareness programmes in various communities till date.
However, DSP Shiva Bahadur Singh said that most of the women are reluctant to file complaints against their husband. A police data showed that 75 cases of gender-based violence were reported within the last eight months.
