Sushil Thapa of Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) and Diwana Sherma of Nepal Police Club (NPC) were declared the best players of the Bir Ganeshman National Boxing Championships on Saturday.

On the final day when the Armymen were also declared the team champions in the men’s category, Thapa and Sherma won motorcyles which was given for the first time in the history of Nepali domestic boxing. Bir Ganeshman Foundation’s Executive Chairman Prakash Man Singh and tournament coordinator Rajeev Shrestha honoured the two boxers.

Out of the eight finals played on Saturday, TAC won five gold medals. Their women’s team was also declared the champion on Friday. Thapa won the men’s 49kg gold defeating Pradip Maharjan of Nepal Armed Police Force (APF). Mohan Gurung of Province 6 and Bhanu Bista of Province 7 were the losing semi-finalists.

Prem Chaudhary won the 52kg final overcoming Bikram Pariyar of APF. Chandra Bahadur Thapa of NPC and Sulav Raj Tuladhar of Province 1 had claimed bronze. In another TAC-APF duel, Bimal Roka won the 56kg title beating Puran Rai as Army won their third gold. Ganesh Thapa of Province 2 and Mahendra Chand of Province 7 earned bronze medals.

Dinesh Shrestha of NPC denied Army another gold defeating Ek Bahadur Ghale in the 60kg final. Ganesh Thapa Magar of Province 5 and Prakash Limbu of APF were the bronze medallist. Bhupendra Thapa won another gold for NPC easing past Sonam Karki of APF in the 64kg final. Suresh Nepali of TAC and Indra Sunar of Province 6 won bronze medals.

APF finally had some delight after Bikash Karki handed them a 69kg gold with a victory over Bishnu Prasad Ghale of TAC. Rajesh Gurung of Province 1 and Manish Dangol of Province 3 lost in the semi-finals. Another APF pugilist Suman Karki won the 75kg gold after he earned a walkover win from Armyman Deepak Shrestha. Diwash Gurung of Province 2 and Diwesh Bhumilal of Province 3 were joint third.

TAC wrapped up the tournament with the 81kg gold through Rabi Sunar who dispatched Keshar Khatri of Province 5. Hikmat Bahadur Shahi of Province 7 and Sushan Pun of Province 4 had entered the last four in the category. The winners and runners-up from each category received Rs 25,000 and Rs 15,000 respectively.
