Dauphins clinch Pokhara Cup

Dauphins Family of Cameroon clinched the sixth Pokhara Cup football tournament title with a battling 1-0 win over Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) Club in the final here on Sunday.

Yannick Owona capitalized on a short pass inside the area to score the winning goal in 54th minute. The first half had ended with Dauphins missing out on a few scoring chances. Owona was declared man-of-the-match. Champions Dauphins received Rs 755,000 and runners-up APF collected Rs 405,555.

Despite the title triumph Dauphins skipper Jo Angoula said the match was really a tough one. “Playing football in Nepal is really a challenge. Players here are accustomed of playing with pace and you can only have a chance of winning if you match their pace,” said Angoula.

APF coach Rajendra Tamang said Dauphins took advantage of their physical strength to overpower his team. “We lost but we put in a really great fight against a foreign team,” added Tamang.

APF goalkeeper Raju Nagarkoti was declared the best player of the tournament and won a motorcycle for his performance. Nagarkoti also collected the best goalkeeper award and earned an additional Rs 25,000.

Ramesh Dangal of APF was named the best defender, Heman Gurung of Manang Marshyangdi Club the best midfielder, Yannick of Dauphins the best striker and Rajendra Tamang of APF the best coach. All individual award winners received Rs 25,000 each.

Hosts Kaski District Football Association also felicitated Uttam Gurung with a scooter for his contribution towards the development of football in Pokhara. Nagarik Dailly journalist Umesh Pun was also feted with Rs 25,000.
