Tournament underdogs CYC Attariya staged a remarkable comeback with the ball to defend a low total to stun two-time defending champions Dhangadhi Stars in the Dhangadhi Premier League on Tuesday.
Under difficult morning conditions at the Fapla Cricket Ground, Stars restricted Attariya to 95-5 in 20 overs where Sunny Patel’s 28-ball 35 pushed them close to triple figures. Bhuwan Karki then took four wickets and Patel took two wickets and four catches to stop Stars at 90-9.
Stars needed 18 runs from the last over bowled by Kamal Singh Airee and Raju Rijal was close to handing them a sensational victory hitting Airee for a four and a six in the first three deliveries. But Rijal only managed two in the next three as Stars crashed to their second consecutive defeat in the tournament.
Patel had done the damage early in Stars innings sending back opener Sunil Dhamala (four) and Monday’s half century maker Amit Shrestha (duck) on consecutive deliveries. Skipper Dipendra Singh Airee bowled United Arab Emirates skipper Rohan Mustafa to put Stars on back foot. Mustafa made 18 off 27 with two fours.
Karki demolished the lower and lower-middle order that included key wickets of Pawan Sarraf (duck) and skipper Sompal Kami (10). Rijal made a run-a-ball 26 with a six
and a four. Karki returned the figures of 4-10 from four overs.
Earlier, Jay Kishan Kolsawala gave Attariya a
modest start adding 26 runs for the first wicket with Subhendu Pandey (three) before Mustafa dismissed both the openers in consecutive overs. Kolsawala scored 21 off 26 with a six and a four. With runs hard to come by, Patel made some crucial runs hitting two sixes and two boundaries. Mustafa took 2-14 from four overs for Stars, while Kami,
Amir Hayat and Bipin Khatri had one scalp apiece.
