The committee investigating the sexual abuse of students by teachers at Lalitpur Madhyamik Vidhyalaya has asked the school to recall its principal Madhav Sitaula from the United States.
Sitaula has been in the US for a few months and his sister Geeta Sitaula is the vice principal at the school.
During a meeting on Monday, the committee formed under Lalitpur Metropolitan City Ward 5 Chairman Bikash Shrestha asked the school to summon the principal, according to a report in Kantipur Daily. The group also directed the school to install CCTV cameras in classrooms and make arrangements for counselling services to students.
“Principal is the chief of a school but here that person is not present,” said Suprabhat Bhandari, a member of the committee. “It is irresponsible for a principal not to be present in school when it is facing such crisis,” he added.
The abuse of students by its teachers came to light after the Post ran a report about how its Maths teacher Bodha Raj ‘Basu’ Tripathee sexually abused young girls for decades. Two weeks later, two more teachers from the school were also accused of sexual abuse by former students.
Last week, Tripathee took poison and was rushed to Mediciti Hospital for treatment. Shrestha, the committee chairman, said they have not been able to speak to him because he is still receiving treatment.
Meanwhile, National Human Rights Commission has written to the school asking it to present details about the allegations within seven days.
