Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has directed concerned stakeholders to raise the issue of Mahakali Treaty with priority in the third joint meeting of experts from Nepal and India that will take place in Kathmandu on Wednesday.

Talking to Nepali officials taking part in the meeting on Tuesday, PM Oli directed the officials to float their opinions openly in the interest of the country and carry out preparations for the same.

“Our first priority is to implement the Mahakali treaty. According to the treaty, Nepal should get 10 cumecs water,” Prime Minister Oli said.

Stating that Nepal has not yet obtained the 350 cusec water in Chandani-Dodhara area as per the Mahakali Treaty signed on February 2, 1996, the PM said that Nepali delegation should impel their Indian counterpart to abide by the Article 4 of Mahakali Treaty. The treaty states that India should provide 350 cusec water for irrigation in Nepal’s Chandani-Dhodhara.

The Water and Energy Commission Secretariat on Tuesday had organised a meeting at Singha Durbar to apprise the Prime Minister of implementing the Pancheshwar Multipurpose Project.

Energy Minister Barsha Man Pun, chief political advisor of the Prime Minister Bishnu Prasad Rimal and foreign relations adviser to the Prime Minister Rajan Bhattarai were present at the meeting.
