Himalayan Sherpa Club stunned defending champions Three Star Club 3-1 rallying from a goal down to enter the semi-finals of the fifth Mai Valley Gold Cup football tournament here on Wednesday.
Former national team striker Anil Gurung, who had scored his first hat-trick for the club in Aaha-Rara Gold Cup in Pokhara, had provided Three Star an early 14th minute lead but the Sherpas made a remarkable comeback to send the holders back home from the first match of the tournament.
Bijay Shrestha equalised for the Sherpas in the 19th minute as both teams headed into the second half locked at 1-1. Tridev Gurung then put Sherpa ahead in the 68th minute as Three Star continued to play under pressure. Six minutes later, Sunil Khadka slammed home the third to close any doors for Three Star comeback.
Khadka had struck a treble against Hong Kong Nepalese Academy in tournament’s first match. Three Star were without six of their regular starters who are currently undergoing closed-camp training for the national team. On Thursday, Nepal Armed Police Force Club will take on African side Dauphins Family. The 10-team tournament will give away Rs 700,000 to the champions. The runners-up will take home Rs 400,000.
